Walk to Washington

Walk to Deliver Flushing Remonstrance: A Journey of Conscience

by Laura McGuire

In just over four weeks, we look forward to welcoming a group of people, many of whom will have walked (and canoed!) from Queens in New York City, stopping on their way to Washington DC. There, they will be presenting the historical Flushing Remonstrance as well as contemporary statements of protest and dissent to members of the federal government.

The participants in this pilgrimage of protest, peace, and solidarity will walk almost 300 miles and will come to us on Saturday, May 17. They are going to be spending a day of rest on Sunday the 18th here at Stony Run and Homewood, and will be joining us for a Forum (at 9:30 AM in the Dining Room) to discuss their journey, including talking about the urgings that led to the idea of this walk, the joys and challenges they found in planning, and the status of their progress. They will stay for Meeting for Worship and Simple Lunch, as well.

We have agreed to support them by offering the Meeting House for their use overnight on the 17th, as well as taking care of other needs, including:

  • Welcoming our visitors to the Meetinghouse
  • A vegetarian pot-luck supper on May 17
  • Breakfast on May 18
  • People to serve as road support (driving supplies and other tasks) during their sojourns in Maryland, starting with meeting their canoes after crossing the Susquehanna on May 16, their walk from Little Falls to Stony Run on May 17, their walk from here to the city on the 18th, and then on the road to Patapsco on May 19.
  • The possibility of offering some members of the group a little private time in individual houses, so anyone who is willing to put up a walker or two in their home on the nights of the 17th or 18th.

If you would like to volunteer to help with their overnight stay, please fill out the SignUp Genius form or contact Laura McGuire in the Meeting Office.
