Shining the Light: Giving In Action
GEDCO - Govans Ecumenical Development Corporation
As Stony Run Friends, our commitment to social justice extends to supporting local organizations like GEDCO (Govans Ecumenical Development Corporation), which provides crucial affordable housing, supportive services, and emergency aid. We proudly support their work through our annual budget, designated gifts, and weekly food pantry collections, supplemented by summer harvests from the Community Garden shared with Friends School.
GEDCO partners with faith-based groups to offer important services to low-income individuals and families, including affordable housing for seniors and those facing homelessness or mental health challenges. They also provide emergency assistance via a client-choice food pantry (GEDCO Cares), financial aid for housing and utilities, and employment support to foster self-sufficiency in Baltimore.
Many Stony Run Friends actively engage with GEDCO. Stony Run Member Adrian Bishop serves on their Board, and several Friends regularly volunteer by collecting and delivering non-perishable items donated at our Meetinghouse. Others in our community have also volunteered their time and expertise in GEDCO's offices. We value the collective impact of our community's contributions in uplifting the lives of those GEDCO serves.
