PeaceFire for Peace Promise Weekend

PeaceFire for Peace Promise Weekend

By Barbara Treasure

Baltimore's Peace Promise Weekend is a quarterly, community-led initiative by the Baltimore Peace Movement aimed at reducing gun violence through 72 hours of peace, love, and community-focused activities. Held on the first weekend of February, August, November, and Mother's Day in May, Peace Promise Weekend encourages residents to host events, honor victims, and foster neighborhood connections.

Formerly known as Baltimore Ceasefire 365, the initiative was founded by a Squadron led by Erricka Bridgeford. Eight years ago, Erricka and the founding Squadron visited Stony Run Friends Meeting during the February Ceasefire weekend, in a light sleet storm.

They added their own prayers to a new prayer flag. It’s faded now, yet still part of the array that flies on our front porch throughout Peace Promise Weekends.

When Ceasefire was founded in 2017, there were more than 300 murders a year in Baltimore City. Last year, 133: still too many. Many people and institutions have stepped up to achieve this. After a murder-free Ceasefire Weekend some years ago, Erricka said, “Baltimore made a choice.”

Every Peace Promise Weekend, Stony Run Friends flies its own display of peace and prayer flags, including the one contributed by Erricka and the founding Squadron. I thank Stony Run Friends for choosing to connect with The Baltimore Peace Movement since 2017.
