Being a Quaker: A Guide for Newcomers by Geoffrey Durhan. The author starts with “The Quakers changed my life”. While your experience may not be so dramatic, Durhan writes eloquently about his personal journey in understanding and embracing Quakerism. He covers the basics like Meeting for Worship and how the community works. Easy to read with interesting answers to questions like are Quakers Christian? When asked do they believe Jesus is the son of God? He answers “yes but I am and so are you.”
Light to Live By: An exploration in Quaker Spirituality by Rex Ambler. This well known Quaker writer looks at the spirituality of Friends by comparing the writings of the early Friends, (Old time Friends) to the writings of modern day Friends. You might think that Universalist or Anti theist Friends introduced the use of the Light, or Spirit instead of God when talking about spirituality. Ambler finds that the old time Quakers set the tone. A very interesting study into the roots of Quakerism and what he finds is much like Quakerism at Stony Run.
Games for the Soul: 40 Playful Ways to Find Fun and Fulfillment in a Stressful World by Drew Leader MD, PhD. What is more needed at this time in our lives than an engaging way to support our Spirit? We often have a hard time accepting that spiritual growth has to do with lightening up, going with the flow, surrender, non-productivity, and joy, says a review of Games for the Soul. So, enjoy chapters on celebrating the ordinary, acceptance and forgiveness, loving self, contacting the divine, the wonder of creation, and much more. Drew Leader is a member of Stony Run.
