Library Book Review: You Should Meet John Lewis

You Should Meet John Lewis is a Ready-to-Read book written by Denise Lewis Parick and illustrated by Steff Walthall. It's an engaging story for early elementary readers about John Lewis' beginnings as a child on a sharecropper farm, following him through his journey as a leader in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and as a Representative from Georgia in the U.S. Congress.

Readers will learn how John, as a five year old, had responsibility for the chickens on his farm. Readers will discover how John’s parents learned that going to school was so important to him. And, readers will learn the origin of his well known phrase, “make good trouble, necessary trouble."

Early in his life, John knew that segregation was wrong, and as a college student he was inspired by Martin Luther King, to become a leader in the Civil Rights Movement.

You Should Meet John Lewis is a must-read book, and is filled with stories and facts that adults and children can enjoy.
