#FreedomWalk2026

Freedom Walk 2026

From May 4 - 11, Stony Run is going to be hosting a group of walkers at the Meetinghouse. You are invited to take part in the journey!

#FreedomWalk2026 is a modern-day retracing of the Underground Railroad to Canada. The 750-mile pilgrimage, following 19th-century routes to freedom, commemorates the brave self-liberators, abolitionists, and their secret networks, sparking inspiration for future generations to secure equity, justice, and liberation for all. This experience is supported by The Menare Foundation, which supports the exploration of the history of the Underground Railroad, and Coming to the Table, supporting individuals and communities to acknowledge and heal wounds from the racism that is rooted in the United States’ history of slavery.

Their journey begins at Sandy Spring Friends Meeting and Stony Run will be their second home base. The group will be walking about 12 miles each morning, arriving at the Meetinghouse (by van) at mid-day. While here, the walkers will be hosting a number of events as well as sampling the many resources in the Baltimore community.

Join us for a Potluck dinner with the walkers on the day that they arrive here on foot, Wednesday, May 6 at 6:30 PM. We will have the opportunity to hear from the walkers and share food and fellowship together. (All are welcome; please bring a side dish or dessert to share. There is no need to sign up, but if you have any questions, please contact Brian Gamble, Elizabeth DuVerlie, or Laura McGuire.)

In addition to this dinner, the group will be hosting two weaving events, welcoming textile artist Kip Beardsley to document their time in this space and the stories and experiences shared here. They will also be traveling with a 9-foot Harriet Tubman “The Journey to Freedom” sculpture that will be on display on the Stony Run property along Charles Street for the duration of their stay with us.

Other aspects of their time here are still in discernment, but members of the Stony Run community are invited to take part, and we will keep you all in the loop as more details emerge.
