Conscientious Objector Training

CRITICAL RULE: You should not wait for a draft to declare yourself a conscientious objector.

On Sunday, May 17, Stony Run is excited to be partnering with the Center on Conscience and War for a Conscientious Objector (CO) Training. Join us in the Meeting room at 1:00 PM for an interactive and engaging presentation with Stony Run Friend Andrew Gorby, a military CO, and CCW's Bill Galvin, a Vietnam-era CO, co-facilitating the presentation and dialogue.

Participants will leave this 2-hour presentation with:

  • a clear understanding of what it means to be a CO,
  • how to document their beliefs as a CO prior to a potential draft,
  • the process for registering with the Selective Service System (SSS),
  • understanding the penalties for choosing not to register,
  • how registration will change at the end of 2026 with automatic registration, and
  • how to prepare for and respond to a hypothetical draft (including Alternative Civilian Service).

Designed for youth and young adults ages 12-25, all are welcome and encouraged to attend, though individuals older than the provided age range will be asked to use different facilitation tools and "silent" engagement throughout to elevate the voices of those directly impacted by legally required registration with the SSS (right now, that's individuals assigned male at birth between ages 18-26) and their age-related peers of all genders.

This event will be in-person only and, while free, we need to know to expect you. RSVP by following this link. Sign-up closes one week prior to the event.

Stony Run is planning to hold this training annually on the First Day following International Conscientious Objector Day on May 15th. If you have any questions, please contact Laura in the Meeting office.
