An Introduction to Stony Run Staff Roles

An Introduction to Stony Run Staff Roles

By Committee for Support and Supervision

December 15, 2025

Stony Run is a vibrant community that values the contributions of each person. We seek to provide a spiritual home within an ethical framework that allows us to live our best lives. Through our committee work, we nurture each other, act on issues of social justice, racism, the environment, peace and more.

We are fortunate to have staff to support the work of the Meeting. These staff include the Facilitator, Operations Coordinator (Office), and Operations Coordinator (Communications) as well as several rotating Child Care Workers. As of December 31, the Housekeeper role has been transitioned to an outside contractor.

Staff Roles

In the Quaker tradition, there is no leader; paid staff are generally understood to serve the meeting under the care and authority of the meeting itself, rather than to direct or govern it. Decision-making remains grounded in the committee structure and gathered meeting for business, where all members of the community participate as equals, seeking unity under the guidance of the Spirit rather than relying on hierarchy or professional expertise. Our paid staff roles are practical supports that enable the spiritual life of the meeting to flourish. The three roles discussed in this post are directly supervised by the Committee for Support and Supervision, currently clerked by Rebecca Snyder.

The Facilitator role, currently held by Laura McGuire, is a full-time position that provides general oversight of the work of the office and guidance to its staff and works to expand the connections and reach of Stony Run in the diverse, wider community. The Facilitator’s role requires global thinking and a collaborative attitude. The Facilitator identifies and draws out the skills and talents of individuals in the Meeting to do the work of the Meeting and cultivates relationships with external partners and audiences to collaborate on the work of the Meeting.

The Facilitator’s job encompasses three distinct areas of responsibility: Meeting Support, Outreach to the broader Baltimore community, and Staff Supervision. On a regular basis, the Facilitator, in collaboration with the Committee for Support and Supervision (CSS), will identify priorities and challenges to focus the work. For a full job description, please click here.

The Operations Coordinator (Office) role, currently held by Elizabeth Elliott, is staffed at 28 hours weekly. This role provides organizational and technical support to the Meeting and requires a Friendly, outgoing personality with ability to work with persons of diverse backgrounds and interaction styles. The Operations Coordinator (Office) should possess excellent data entry and written communications skills and be comfortable with current office technology. Working with the committees and in collaboration with other staff, the Operations Coordinator (Office) has three main areas of responsibility: Data Management, Meeting Support, and Communications. For a full job description, please click here.

The Operations Coordinator (Communications) role, currently held by Ashley Gorby, is staffed at 8-10 hours weekly. This role focuses on communication channels inside and outside of the Meeting, including preparation of the monthly newsletter and weekly silent announcements using Constant Contact software, supporting the communications work of the Meeting Clerk, assisting with website updates and blog posting as well as interacting with those in the community. In collaboration with CSS and reviewed by the Meeting, this role has established guidelines for material considered for Stony Run’s communication channels. Working in collaboration with other staff, the Operations Coordinator (Communications) has two main areas of responsibility: Data Management and Communications. For a full job description, please click here

Performance Evaluations

The Committee for Support and Supervision is charged with routinely conducting performance reviews with the staff under its direct supervision. This includes the Facilitator, Operations Coordinator and Communications Coordinator. We believe it is important to gather feedback from a variety of sources to provide a full picture of a staffer’s performance. To that end, the committee has a three-prong approach to feedback: staff self-evaluation through a specific form that includes goals for the coming year; community feedback solicited through the Silent Announcements and direct asks to committee clerks; and direct experience by the committee. CSS members synthesize and anonymize the feedback and create an evaluation with specific goals for the future. One or more of the committee members meet with the staffer to discuss the evaluation and come to unity on the goals for the year. This final document is contained in the staffer’s confidential personnel record and a copy is provided to the staffer. A report to the meeting is provided by CSS with a general sense of the evaluation and goals going forward, omitting the specifics.
