A McKim Summer
This July, at the McKim Center in East Baltimore, 45 campers and youth leaders participated in a combination of Wisdom Projects as well as educational and athletic activities and field trips. Campers learned the fundamentals of golf, basketball, volleyball, and more. They took field trips to The Walters Museum, Woodberry Crossing, the Rawlings Conservatory, Adventure Park USA, and spent a day of camp at Gunpowder Meeting (including learning Quaker history, visiting a nearby farm and enjoying pizza and snow cones). The campers and youth leaders worked together to prepare homemade meals emphasizing fresh fruits and vegetables complemented by fresh herbs from gardens the campers planted. They learned about how the human body functions using medical models like an artificial lung. They explored chemistry and physics, for example, how liquids, solids, and matter move. Each camper left camp with a personal scrap book filled with their art, writing, and photos of new and old friends.
The Quaker connection with the McKim Center begins with John McKim and the establishment in 1833 of the first Free School in Baltimore, long before the concept of public schools. Learn more about the evolution of the McKim Center and its connection to Stony Run Friends in future blogs.
